These Unique Handcrafted Hollow Polychromatic
Christmas Ornaments use many different species of exotic and domestic hardwoods. The globe's
are hollow. Nothing weighs more than 2-1/2 Ounces. Everything is turned on a
lathe. Most feature four individual vignettes set off with contrasting veneer
from 1/32" to 1/8". Thanks to my good friend and woodworker extraordinaire, Don
Russell, Oxford, Georgia, for introducing me to the polychromatic style which he
uses to make
large vases and bowls.
Woods used include: Jatoba,
Purpleheart, Bloodwood, Yellowheart, Goncalo Alves, Wenge, Zebrawood, Lacewood,
Cherry, Maple, Black Walnut, and Mahogany
The Globes average very close to 2-1/4" in
diameter. Overall height is between 7" - 9" with most approximately 8-1/2" tall.
The turned lidded box is 2-1/2" wide by
2-3/4" tall.
Here are two globes with scroll sawn vignettes. I have not yet
mounted the icicles or top buttons on the first one.

Ron's Woodworking Biography
Seminar Details
It was particularly
meaningful that Don Russell won a Polychromatic Laminated Hollow Christmas
Ornament I donated for a raffle at a local wood turning seminar featuring Nick
Cook and Dale Nish September 3rd. I took a class from Don where I learned how
he makes his wonderful
Staved Polychromatic vases and bowls
(more) and it was there
that I learned how Don makes some of his beautiful center rings. I just
adapted those techniques for use with my ornaments. Mr. Nish purchased an
ornament for his private collection. So did Bruce Bell from Australia when he
recently visited.
In November of 2005, I will be demonstrating how
to make these beautiful and different ornaments and will be the featured
demonstrator at several club meetings about that same time in the
Atlanta, Georgia area. The club
meetings are usually free - the seminar is $15. Please help me spread the
word to some of the other turning clubs which may have an interest and
are a reasonable driving distance from Atlanta, Georgia. (Others by
special arrangement)
Here are the details:
Folks attending the
seminar will learn:
Quick and easy hollowing techniques
for hollowing the globe ( I use a reground 1" round nosed scraper)
How to hollow
through a 1-1/4" hole (the easy way) and then make it magically disappear!
Your momma can't even find it!
How to make icicles that really pop
and have a huge WOW Factor!
Simple and fast glue up techniques
make eye popping vignettes
Practice exercises for learning to
effectively roll a sharp bead and cut a deep cove using 2x4 practice stock
and a stock 3/8" spindle gouge with a special grind.
Finishing techniques for finishing
the ornament right on the lathe
How to make the flower and box
pictured above using the "Don Russell" method
Gluing techniques for attaching the
icicle and top button.
Special drilling device for attaching
the screw eye.
How I routinely complete ornaments
like those above in less than 1 hour at the lathe.
All of this and more makes the $15
investment a real bargain ($20 for married couples)
